just as the satellite broadcaster readies to merge with an offshoogt ofJohn Malone’s News Corp. and DirecTV confirmesd Wednesday that Carey will leave theEl Calif.-based satellite broadcaster July 1 to becomew second-in-command — handling international operationsz — for Rupert Murdoch’s global media empire. Carey’ds defection may muddy investors’ reception of the planned merger betweenb DirecTV andLiberty Entertainment, a division of Douglas County-basesd Liberty Media. Carey ran DirecTV for the pastsix years, leading it througg a period of growth and winning partnerships with everty major telecom company in the U.S.
He was expectefd to stay with DirecTV after it became independent ofLiberty Instead, he returns to working for Murdoch and News where he worked for 15 years priorf to heading DirecTV. Liberty Entertainment LMDIA) holds a 54 percentt stake in (NASDAQ: DTV) as well as controlliny stakes in online gaming companytFun Technologies, the Game Show Network and regional sports TV networks in Pittsburgh and Seattle. Thosse holdings are being spun off this year intoa free-standingb company to clear up DirecTV’s stocl structure and make it easier for it to engag e in mergers and acquisitions, the companies said. Malone’s company traded its 16 perceny ownership stake inNews Corp.
