State doles out $250M in education stimulus money - Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal:

That includes general operations funds forthe 2009-100 school year, funds for special educationb programs and programs that serve disadvantaged grants for school lunch equipment and funds for homelesz students. The funding includes $164.7 million in stabilization money that has been includede in the public school funding formula forthe 2009-10p school year. School districts can use the moneyu for regularoperating expenses. It will be available July 1, pendin g approval by the U.S. Department of Education. About $47.2 million will go toward projects under the Individualas with DisabilitiesEducation Act.
This represents about half of the speciak education stimulus funds schools are expected to receivein 2009. Schoolws can use this money to hire additionall support staff andparent liaisons, do training and professional developmenft for special education teacher s and hire job coaches to work with high school students with speciao needs so they can enter the work force. The funds are availabl e now. About $38.7 million is in Title I funds fordisadvantaged That’s about half of the Title I funds schoolsd are likely to receive in 2009.
The moneu can be used for expanding after-school programs, hiring additional staff and professiona development for teachers and principals working in schoolxs with highpoverty rates. That money is also available now. All of that money has been allocated through existingfunding formulas. Othere awards the state is disbursinginclude $548,313 for grantsd under the Education for the Homeless Fund to addresws the needs of homeless children. In the new fiscal which startsin July, $383,313w will be awarded to 24 school districts.
Another $165,000 will be awarded through a competitive grant process in About $924,743 will go toward purchasing or renovatinv food service equipment as part of the National School Lunch Program. That monehy has been awarded to 31 districte and schools through a competitivegrant
